TRANSITIONS 3 2013
Synopsis
Transitions, a journal of crossings, is a forum for ideas celebrating crossings whether they be universal, personal, real or imaginary, in story, article or poem. It invites a personal take of the universal themes of transition and transformation. Pavement Pounders are very pleased to be publishing this edition in partnership with Mental Fight Club. Following on from the themes in Transitions 1 of mythological concepts of migration, home and otherworldliness and Transitions 2 of the ‘liminal’ and the ‘fountain’, Transitions 3 addresses broadly the themes of ascent, recovery, transformation and reintegration. By turning back to myth – even that of Orpheus’ or Demeter’s descent and ascent- it believes we can look forward to a greater story of which we are part, and by understanding the universal aspect of our own personal experience be freed from its constraints, ‘So much good writing is in itself a form of health’. Contributors were encouraged to write about their journey into mental illness and recovery from it. The result is full of colour. Accounts of struggle are matched by lively, haunting, heartening and lyrical tales and poems, including one by Ben Okri, Mental Fight Club’s patron, and illustrations by the artist Rosemary Clunie. If Transitions 1 focused on descents, Transitions 3 keeps ascents well in view with such words as restore, renew, resume or rekindle not going amiss. |
