TRANSITIONS 4 2014
Synopsis
Transitions 4, published and edited by Pavement Pounders CIC, is produced for the Between the Storms mixed media project, which also includes spoken and visual memories about Folkestone as a port, and is funded by the Heritage Lottery Fund. This journal part of the project continues with the theme of crossings, actual and metaphoric, that explore the paradox of port as both haven and bastion. Our project mission to explore the heritage of Folkestone as a harbour and cross-channel port by looking out as well as in, provides the backbone for Transitions 4. Whether bizarre, renown, heroic, life changing, ordinary or literary, we set out with the idea of retrieving personal memories of crossing the Channel from or to Folkestone, then turned to the broader implications of heritage of place by sea, whether to do with sea-crossings, culture, land or sea. Some very interesting pieces have emerged. So Transitions 4 divides Folkestone’s heritage loosely into four. Heritage Crossings contains accounts of ferries and swims. Heritage Arts of musical, literary and artistic ‘incidents’ in Folkestone as well as something by artists from Triennial 2014, whose very apt theme, ‘Look Out’, draws attention to Folkestone’s position as place of embarkation and arrival for many millions. Heritage Land takes a look at Folkestone’s ancient, ‘natural’ heritage in geology and geography, and Heritage ‘Sea’ contains lyrical pieces celebrating the solace and inspiration of our greatest heritage, the sea. |
